Journal History

Regional Geology and Metallogeny is the first official journal of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, which was founded in the perestroika years. It has been published since 1993 on the initiative of Academician Aleksey D. Shcheglov, Director of the All-Russian Geological Research Institute of A. P. Karpinsky in those days. Regional Geology and Metallogeny was established to enable geological industry professionals to publish diverse geological data, specifically including geological composition of the Russian Federation and neighboring countries, and mineral resources distribution patterns. The industry’s priority tasks underpinned a list of key problems to cover in the first and subsequent journal issues:

– state-of-the art studies in regional structure geological composition and mineral resources distribution patterns especially pertinent to North-West Russia and the Baltic Shield;

— difficulties in predicting regional mineral deposits;

— geology theory basic problems contributing to knowledge about mineral resources formation and distribution;

— applied geology problems, primarily pertinent to enhancing efficiency of geological survey, exploration, and predictive work;

— data on improving the state geological mapping, as well as utilizing modern computer-assisted research methods;

— challenges of geoecological studies.

The journal originally covered the main sections: Regional Geology and Metallogeny. Where relevant, there were some other sections: Brief Reports, Chronicle, Memorable Dates, History Pages, Reviews, etc. The journal has published nearly 1,500 papers over the last 30 years, with two thirds of articles on regional geology and metallogeny.

The article authors were geologists from all regions of Russia — its North-West and central parts to Sakhalin and Kamchatka. Russian and foreign researchers collaborated on some articles to be published only in English. The journal highlights articles on assessing prospects of the Russian territory for various types of mineral resources, results of exploring mineral deposits.

Recently Regional Geology and Metallogeny has won a reputation of a printed edition that embraces findings of the state geological mapping, regional geological and geophysical studies, which present the government’s key activity; the activity enforces the level of geological coverage, which addresses governmental tasks to timely establish subsoil resources management and mineral resources reproduction in the Russian Federation.
